EW May’ve Accidentally Confirmed Henry Cavill’s Superman Exit

The internet got excited yesterday after Entertainment Weekly revealed our first look at Netflix’s The Witcher TV show starring Henry Cavill. Ever since the British star signed up for the video game adaptation, speculation has been rife about whether his jumping ship to a new franchise means that he’s done with the DCEU and won’t be returning as the Man of Steel. Now, an interesting potential slip-up on social media has given us a new piece of evidence that this is indeed the case.

While sharing their exclusive on Instagram, EW wrote the following caption:

“Netflix is finally revealing first look photos from their upcoming ‘The Witcher’ series. Ex-Superman Henry Cavill stars as Witcher Geralt in the fantasy series, alongside ‘Sherwood’s Anya Chalotra and newcomer Freya Allan…”

The post has since been edited to remove the “Ex-Superman” comment, but here’s a screenshot for proof:

So, what are we to make of this? Has EW heard some information that’s yet to be published concerning Cavill’s lack of a future in the DC universe? It’s possible, but there’s another, more mundane option. Maybe EW’s social media manager got their wires crossed and believed Cavill had officially vacated the role. After all, when commenters started making a fuss about the caption, they then changed it.

If this is indeed the case, the confusion is acceptable as it’s so widely believed that Cavill won’t return as Superman. Most think we’re in a similar period to when we all knew Ben Affleck was done as Batman but he hadn’t announced his exit yet. Then again, we did just learn that Ezra Miller may yet return as The Flashwhich has just got itself a new director, so who knows what could happen on the Cavill front. He did just get a gig playing Sherlock Holmes, for crying out loud.

Tell us, though, do you think Henry Cavill is an ex-Superman? And do you want him to be? Join the conversation in the comments section below.
