‘Spider-Man’ Actor Tom Holland Wants Marvel To Represent More Than Just Straight White Men

Spider-Man Far From Home Marvel Multiverse Tom Holland

Spider-Man Far From Home Marvel Multiverse Tom HollandSpider-Man: Far From Home star Tom Holland has assured fans that Marvel will be showcasing more than just straight white males in its films, as the studio moves towards the inclusion of LGBTQ+ characters in its near future.

Speaking with The Sunday Times, Tom Holland was asked whether or not he thinks Spider-Man could be gay and how soon something like that could happen:

“Yeah of course. I can’t talk about the future of the character because honestly I don’t know and it’s out of my hands. But I do know a lot about the future of Marvel, and they are going to be representing lots of different people in the next few years. The world isn’t as simple as a straight white guy. It doesn’t end there, and these films need to represent more than one type of person.”

While Tom Holland may be unaware of Marvel’s future plans for Spider-Man, rumors have swirled that the Marvel Cinematic Universe may feature its first-ever gay male lead in The Eternals. It was previously reported that Marvel Studios was looking for an actor, 30-49 years in age that looks like they can hold their own amongst heroes such as Thor and Captain America. While Marvel is always open to all ethnicity, it was said that they would prefer their Eternals hopeful to be an openly gay actor.

So far, The Eternals has cast Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, and Ma Dong-Seok, though it is unclear as to which characters they are playing. Salma Hayek was also recently reported as being eyed by Marvel for the project.

As for current LGBTQ+ representation in the MCU, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige recently defended the small usage of the studio’s first openly gay character in Avengers: Endgame in which director Joe Russo appeared briefly as a grieving husband who opens up about going on a date for the first time since losing his partner. Many fans have heavily criticized Marvel for the insignificance of its first-ever LGBTQ+ character on screen.

Here’s the official synopsis for Tom Holland’s Spider-Man: Far From Home:

Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man must step up to take on new threats in a world that has changed forever.

Directed by Jon Watts from a script written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, Spider-Man: Far From Home stars Tom Holland, Jake Gyllenhaal, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Tony Revolori, Martin Starr, Numan Acar, J.B.
