Cult classic SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom is getting a surprising remaster.

THQ Nordic has revealed a surprising remaster of the 2003 game, SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom

SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom was originally developed by Heavy Iron Studios and released for PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube, and PC with a handheld version developed for Game Boy Advance. To be honest, the game wasn't exactly revolutionary. Gameplay-wise, it was a fairly generic action-adventure title with 3D platformer elements.

That doesn't really matter, though, as Battle for Bikini Bottom happens to be a loving tribute to just about everything SpongeBob SquarePants. The game's expansive world is loaded with references and landmarks straight from the show. It's kind of like the brilliant Simpsons: Hit and Run in that respect. Considering that the game was released around the peak of SpongeBob SquarePants' popularity, you can understand why so many fondly remember what is considered to be a cult classic.

According to THQ Nordic, this new version of the game (officially called SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated) will be a remaster of the original title rather than a full remake. They mention how it will stay true to the original experience but will also include a new multiplayer mode. Sadly, they don't elaborate on what the multiplayer mode will feature, and since they also said that the game will not be at E3 2019, it sounds like we're going to have to wait a while before we hear more about the remaster.

In any case, this remaster is the first of supposedly several Nickelodeon games that THQ Nordic has in production. All-in-all, they're apparently working on about 80 games at the moment with over half of those titles being unannounced as of a couple of weeks ago.

SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated is set to release for PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC, but the game currently has no release date.
