Exclusive: Sony Temporarily Shuts Down Noah Centineo’s ‘Masters of the Universe’ Movie

Noah Centineo He-Man Masters of the UniverseDevelopment on the Noah Centineo led Masters of the Universe movie has been temporarily shut down at Sony Pictures.

Sony’s Masters of the Universe has been in development for a few years now and the project has been revived and shut down numerous times. Noah Centineo recently signed on to play Adam of Eternia/He-Man and while that casting was met with a bit of criticism, fans of the franchise were just excited that the film was moving forward. Just when it seemed like Sony was pushing forward with the live-action Masters of the Universe movie, development on the project has been temporarily shut down due to script and budget issues, insiders with knowledge on the project tell Heroic Hollywood.

The shutdown is only temporary as the studio has too much invested in the project. Another source tells us that the mythical kingdom of Eternia is prohibitively expensive to create in live-action.

Are you disappointed with this news? Were you excited to see Noah Centineo as He-Man in Masters of the Universe? Sound off in the comments section below!

Based on the Mattel franchise of the same name, Masters of the Universe centers on the conflict between He-Man, the secret identity of Prince Adam, and the villainous sorcerer Skeletor on the planet Eternia. The franchise has previously spawned an animated TV series that ran from 1983 to 1985 and 1987 live-action film starring Dolph Lundgren.

Directed by The Nee Brothers from a script written by Iron Man writers Art Marcum and Matt Holloway, Masters of the Universe stars Noah Centineo as Prince Adam/He-Man. Sony’s Matthew Milam is overseeing the project for the studio with Mattel serving as a partner on the film. Escape Artists’ Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, and Steve Tisch are producing alongside Franklin Entertainment’s DeVon Franklin.

Master of the Universe is scheduled to be released in theaters on March 5, 2021.

Veteran X-Men producer Simon Kinberg makes his directorial debut with Dark Phoenix in addition to producing the film with Hutch Parker, Lauren Schuler Donner and Todd Hallowell. Dark Phoenix is expected to be Fox's final X-Men film featuring the core X-Men cast in the cinematic universe launched by director Bryan Singer in 2000 with the Disney-Fox merger now complete.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Tye Sheridan, Sophie Turner, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Evan Peters, and Jessica Chastain. Here's the film's synopsis:

“This is the story of one of the X-Men’s most beloved characters, Jean Grey, as she evolves into the iconic DARK PHOENIX.  During a life-threatening rescue mission in space, Jean is hit by a cosmic force that transforms her into one of the most powerful mutants of all.  Wrestling with this increasingly unstable power as well as her own personal demons, Jean spirals out of control, tearing the X-Men family apart and threatening to destroy the very fabric of our planet.  The film is the most intense and emotional X-Men movie ever made. It is the culmination of 20 years of X-Men movies, as the family of mutants that we’ve come to know and love must face their most devastating enemy yet — one of their own.”

Dark Phoenix is set to hit theaters on June 7, 2019. Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for the latest news on the future of the X-Men.
