To be completely honest, we’ve all been mostly left in the dark regarding Wonder Woman 1984‘s plot until just recently. Then again, knowing that Gal Gadot and Patty Jenkins are returning as lead actress and director, respectively, is probably enough for most moviegoers to confidently lay down money for a ticket.
But since we’re here to peek into the crystal ball, it’s worth saying that all signs point toward Steve Trevor returning to the land of the living due to the machinations of one Maxwell Lord. Not only that, but the DC Comics villain is also said to be responsible for Barbara Minerva becoming the Cheetah.
When it comes to Diana Prince and her new mission itself, well, That Hashtag Show is reporting she’ll be “acting as a spy during the Cold War,” and that she must “hunt down a nefarious Russian spy.” As you may have figured by now, Wondy is a known superhero at this point.
Of course, this deviates from what’s already been established in the DC Extended Universe, as Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League spoke of how she retreated from the world for a century. Actually, completely ignoring those two flicks would almost work if not for the BvS-connected bookends in 2017’s Wonder Woman. My advice: avoid a nosebleed by not thinking too hard about it.
If anything, this is yet another effort to further establish this character as her own entity separate from a shared universe that didn’t resonate with the public at large. Hey, if keeping the parts that worked can keep this – and Aquaman’s – story going, then we can’t complain too much.
Wonder Woman 1984 arrives in theaters on June 5th, 2021.
