Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, this year's installment in the popular first-person shooter series, won't feature a Zombies mode, a mainstay of the franchise. In fact, Modern Warfare is the first game to ship without a Zombies component since 2013's Ghosts, which instead had a mode called Extinction, where players faced off against hordes of hostile aliens.
According to Infinity Ward campaign gameplay director Jacob Minkoff, speaking to PlayStation Lifestyle, the reason for skipping Zombies this year is simple: Modern Warfare aims to be a more realistic shooter than the Black Ops series, which is the usual home of the undead horde mode.
"Because they focus on more of the stylized, graphic novel, super-hero experience, [Black Ops developer Treyarch] can have the much more 'out there' different types of gameplay in their games," Minkoff said. "But for us, we're trying to create an authentic, realistic feeling world. We don't have the flexibility to do something like put zombies in the game. That would compromise the feeling of playing in a world that feels realistic and authentic and relative to today's conflicts and things we face."
Instead, Modern Warfare will give fans a new single-player campaign as well as a co-op mode, two parts of the story being told in this installment.
“We’re not ready to talk about cooperative play yet, but what I will tell you is that the single-player storyline goes directly into the co-op storyline," Minkoff explained. "No stop. The events just continue. So those elements—gameplay, progression, story—they just continue throughout everything that we have on the disc or digital download.”
Last year's Black Ops 4 did not ship with a campaign at all. It's unclear if Modern Warfare will have a battle royale mode, but early reports suggest that Blackout won't be a part of the package. We'll likely have all of our questions answered at E3 2019 next week.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is set to release on October 25 for PC, Xbox One, and PS4.
