The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that former Batman actor Ben Affleck was never part of Matt Reeves’ plan for the upcoming standalone film The Batman, which is set to introduce Robert Pattinson as the next Caped Crusader.
A new report from the trade has revealed new details regarding Matt Reeves’ plan for the upcoming Batman film, as well as Robert Pattinson’s casting and offering some clarity regarding Ben Affleck’s exit from the franchise. After Ben Affleck dropped out of directing The Batman in January of 2017 — a film which he was originally set to write, direct and star in — Warner Bros. ushered in War for the Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves to take the reigns. While rumors and reports suggested Ben Affleck was no longer going to reprise his role as Batman as early as that summer, the studio denied these claims. It wasn’t until this past January — just shy of two years to the day that Ben Affleck stepped down — that the actor confirmed he would no longer be playing the iconic DC superhero. But it seems the reports were indeed true at the time and Matt Reeves never intended for Ben Affleck to return as the film’s lead.
According to THR, Matt Reeves’ vision for The Batman included a 30-year-old Bruce Wayne, ruling out Ben Affleck for the role from the beginning:
“Reeves, who was hired to write and direct a new Batman movie in February 2017, was envisioning actors while penning the script, according to sources familiar with the filmmaker’s thinking. It helped that this new Batman needed to conform to a defined age bracket. He is written as around 30 years old, and the story is neither another rehashing of his origin nor the tale of a seasoned crimefighter ruling Gotham City. He is Bruce Wayne still trying to find his footing on his way to becoming the genius detective.”
Plot details for The Batman are under wraps, though the project will feature Robert Pattinson as a younger Caped Crusader. The Penguin will be featured as an antagonist in the film along with Catwoman and an unknown rogues gallery of villains. While Ben Affleck’s original script for the project was rumored to have taken inspiration from David Fincher’s The Game, Matt Reeves decided to develop a whole new story for the next Batman film from scratch instead.
Other rumors also suggested that Warner Bros. was also planning to, at one point, feature Ben Affleck bookending the film, similar to Wonder Woman, as the present-day Batman, ultimately connecting the film to the current shared universe, however, this is no longer the case, nor was it ever confirmed.
The Batman is one of the many projects currently being developed by Warner Bros. and DC Films, including The Flash standalone film, Green Lantern Corps, Black Adam, Supergirl, and New Gods.
The DCEU continues forward with Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), on February 7, 2020, and Wonder Woman 1984 on June 5, 2020. A standalone Joker film set outside of the DC Films universe starring Joaquin Phoenix as the Clown Prince of Crime is also set to hit theaters October 4, 2019.
The Batman will be released in theaters on June 25, 2021. Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for the latest news on The Batman and the future of the DC cinematic universe as we learn it.
