If the mid-credits scene of last year’s Aquaman is anything to go by, then we haven’t seen the last of Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s take on Black Manta. And while his character presumably has some unfinished business to settle with Arthur Curry, the actor has also suggested that David Kane ought to cross paths with the Clown Princess of Crime.
Abdul-Mateen was in attendance at this weekend’s Celebrity Fan Fest in San Antonio, where he expressed an interest in having Black Manta team up with the Suicide Squad as the straight man of the group. In particular, the star reportedly liked the idea of seeing his character collaborate with Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, who’s set to return in next year’s Birds of Prey.
It’s true that Kane has an eventful comic book history with Amanda Waller’s team of antiheroes that many fans will be keen to see adapted to the big screen. And with James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad scheduled for release on August 6th, 2021, there’s even a chance that this idea will eventually become a reality.
Abdul-Mateen previously discussed the possibility of a Suicide Squad crossover in an interview with ComicBook.com, arguing that Black Manta “has an opportunity to show up anywhere where Aquaman is,” or appear “anywhere where he has a device or plot to get back to Aquaman.”
Whether or not Gunn’s film has a place for the villain remains unclear, but at the very least, we can expect to see Manta again when Aquaman 2 finally hits theaters on December 16th, 2022. In the meantime, Harley will be getting acquainted with a whole new team of heroes when Birds of Prey comes out on February 7th, 2020.
