It seems that Captain Marvel underwent many changes in the early phases as new concept art shows Brie Larson’s character sporting an entirely different helmet then what we saw on screen.
The image in question came from one Andy Park who has worked as a concept artist for Marvel Studios since Captain America: The First Avenger and has done work for many of the Marvel Cinematic Universe films. Among these was, of course, Captain Marvel. In the image, from Park’s official Twitter account, we see an entirely different design for Brie Larson’s helmet.
The original designs for the helmet allowed Captain Marvel’s hair to flow a bit more freely. The early designs also allowed a bit more of her face to be seen. According to Andy Park, this was before they even attempted the mohawk look.
You can see the early designs for Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel below:
Some of the early costume & helmet design passes I painted up during preproduction of Captain Marvel. Figuring out her helmeted look was especially a fun challenge. This was before attempting the mohawk look. #captainmarvel pic.twitter.com/WJQbC7xzKG

Mississipi Grind helmers Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck have directed from a script written by Geneva Robertson-Dworet, Nicole Perlman and Meg LeFauve. Here’s the official synopsis:
