The Assassin's Creed Odyssey team is working on a new game called Gods and Monsters that is already being compared to a Greek mythology version of The Legend of Zelda.
“It’s flattering that we can be compared to that, but from a storytelling point of view it’s going to be a very unique adventure,” said Gods and Monsters creative direction Jonathan Dumont in an interview with Kotaku when they made that comparison. "The abilities will change, as well as the scope of how it blows up. It is influenced a lot more by Odyssey in that sense mechanically. The fact that we can choose and create our own character and customize it as well, there’s quite a bit that will make it its own.”
Despite Dumont's comments, it's easy to see why some are invoking Zelda when talking about this game. They're both colorful grand adventures loaded with large monsters, swordplay, and special gear that lets you take advantage of unique abilities. One element that certainly separates the two is the use of Greek mythology setting. In fact, the set-up of the title involves Homer reading a story to his grandchildren (Princess Bride-style), while the player character (named Phoenix) enacts the adventures he tells.
Of course, this being a game from the Assassin's Creed Odyssey team, you can expect to see some of the studio's trademark elements make an appearance at some point.
“We have been working very hard over the last 10 years to perfect our tools,” says producer Marc-Alexis Côté. "That’s one of the things we’re really good at in Quebec City: working on our dev processes, working on the toolset to make sure we can build games like this and make them amazing.”
