The turmoil around Swamp Thing and its recent cancellation has been dragging on for some weeks. However, there are a few signs of hope that the well-received series could take a new form, possibly as a feature-length movie. Star Derek Mears is certainly determined to see the character reappear in one way or another, and possibly within a John Constantine or Justice League Dark-based crossover.
Speaking to ScreenRant, Mears played down talks of a definite continuation of the series, but did comment as so about his ideal next step:
“You start to fantasize about where it could possibly go, but then when I read online the rumors they were talking about a 3 season arc and a Justice League Dark show or movie I was like ‘Oh, are you kidding me? That would have been the best!’
Mears also reflected on whether we’ll be seeing more of the magical side of the DC Universe on Swamp Thing, saying:
“So in that realm of magic in the DC universe there are some fun little fan service things happening in our show, which I can’t talk about yet, but you’ll see coming up.”
Could this mean that John Constantine will make an appearance on the show? Although it’s probably unlikely given he’s a key part of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, it wouldn’t be the first time different takes on a character have been attempted. Just think of the double appearance of Ra’s al Ghul on Arrow and Gotham, for example.
Even if Mears is speculating, we’ve seen reports that Warner Bros. have a Constantine movie on the cards, while Justice League Dark has been touted for many years, too. Hopefully one of those projects will get off the ground soon as we’d definitely like to see DC explore this side of their universe, particularly given that the Keanu Reeves-starring Constantine in 2005 wasn’t all bad.
For now though, we’ll just have to make do with the final episodes of Swamp Thing. Still, given the involvement of James Wan in various DC properties, and the current appetite for horror across all platforms, we wouldn’t rule out a return for the character in the future.
