Before the 2017 hit Thor: Ragnarok, in which we got to truly see Chris Hemsworth’s Thor become more of a comedic role, Thor was more of a serious character, and Hemsworth had yet to show us his comedy acting chops. That was probably part of the reason he accepted the role of the airhead receptionist Kevin in the 2016 reboot of Ghostbusters. But he almost didn’t go through with the part.
While recently talking to Variety, Hemsworth explained that he almost quit the job just the night before he began shooting. Here’s what he had to say:
“The night before I was shooting, I almost pulled out. Three or four weeks prior, Paul said to me, ‘I’m going to write up the character. Don’t worry.’ And then I got the script and nothing had changed.”
His agent then set up a last-minute meeting with the director Paul Feig, who assured Hemsworth that he would have a lot of freedom in the role through improvisation. Hemsworth went on to say:
“I was really scared walking onto that set. I had no real plan, so I was just feeding off of them, and I just felt ridiculous. So I used that.”
Hemsworth also said he credits his role in Ghostbusters as the film that primed audiences for seeing him bring the new comedy style to the character Thor in both Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers: Endgame. He said he would have loved to do a Ghostbusters sequel and hasn’t forgiven the online “fanboy” trolls who raked the movie over the coals just because the reboot starred women. He says of the fiasco:
“That whole period I was like, ‘What ownership do you guys have over those characters?’ ‘Oh, you watched the film, therefore you should have a say over where it goes?’ I thought it was very unfortunate and kind of disappointing.”
Disappointing indeed. I liked that movie a lot, so did my kids, and we would have loved another one. But it was a fun film that Hemsworth did shine in, and we will always have that as his jumping off point in comedic roles.
